Group Reflection based on the discussions of the questions formulated after the first chapter.
We realised that in life, Our youths are constantly searching for a meaning in life and the pop culture offers then this opportunity. The ultimate goal of their search is happiness. This is because human person is created in the image and likeness of God, hence, he always looks for the ultimate good in life. However, it seems that in most of our youths today, they are searching for love; that is, the capacity to love, to be loved and feel loved, a sense of identity and belonging, companionship and someone to be close to,a sense of trust and determination in life, they need encouragement to confront the world, they a searching for happiness in life, they need to find hope, sex, etc. The pop culture has all these things and that is why they are fully involved.
The group also tried to put a question about time management. It seems very clear that every person, young or old would love to have free time. But the question is, what exactly is meant by "free time?" It sounds clear but then we realise that the definition of time and what constitutes time for the youths is so vital. How can we define time when everyone else lives within time frame-work!! We realise that lack of clarity on the elements of free time brings conflicts between the youths and adults.
We also pointed out that, in pop culture there are a lot of elements of God that contribute and fulfills they spiritual yearnings. Thus, pop culture gives them harmony and understanding as the vital vibrations for a constant yearning for identity in life. Pop culture has united youths of different colour, race and origin. Its is equally true that such culture needs to be treasured and understood within its own context and environment.
We can say that although the pop culture offers these good opportunities, it at times can influence the youths negatively. the idea is not condemn them but to encourage them to take the right direction.
Another area of our discussion was around the World Youths days that has attracted the youths. and the Pope John Paul II and Benedict used these as occasions to educate the youths, so the question is how can educators used the occasions that attract the youths as instruments of education to the youths?
The group discussed that one thing that educators must do is to identify themselves with the youths in their world. This means the capability to use a language that makes them feel accepted and loved, a language that brings hope and trust. Educators should avoid as much as possible condemning the youths but rather encourage them to reach the point they never thought was possible in life. However, they should be helped to realise the clear picture of the today's world such as situations of poverty, the world of materialism, secularism, diseases like AIDS/HIV, terrorism etc and educate them in this line. Build confidence in the youth that the future needs them and they can transform it. Such an assertion entails that educators should help the youths to achieve their orientations in life. If sharing in pop culture is taken to be an experience of happiness (divinity), then any one who is not logically impaired in his reasoning capacity would enter into pop culture in order to discover authentic wisdom, creativity and power.
The group concluded by asserting that, in whatever situation we find ourselves, the elements about time can never be taken for granted. When we talk about World Youth Day, we already referring to a specific moment when such an event happened or will take place. We we talk about pop culture, we actually referring to a specific time in which the youths are trying to define themselves. As educators, our task will be found lacking if we do not help the youths to be aware of the values of working and developing within time.
